GETTING READY FOR SUNDAY: PREVIEW OF THE READINGS.

THE LESSON:  Ephesians 5:15-20

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart, always and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.

THE HOLY GOSPEL:   Matthew 22:1-14

Once more Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying: ‘The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet, but they would not come. Again he sent other slaves, saying, “Tell those who have been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.” But they made light of it and went away, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his slaves, maltreated them, and killed them.  The king was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his slaves, “The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.” Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; so the wedding hall was filled with guests.  ‘But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding robe, and he said to him, “Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?” And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, “Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” For many are called, but few are chosen.’

PARISH LIFE NOTES

Harvest Ceilidh is next Saturday! See information below.

Operation Christmas Child

The Faith Quest kids are starting to learn about the parable of the Good Samaritan and will finish up the unit by packing shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse to distribute through Operation Christmas Child. For the past 30 years, Samaritan’s Purse has distributed shoe boxes packed with gifts including toiletries, school supplies, clothing, and toys to the world’s most deprived children as a tangible expression of God’s love for them. Since 1993, almost 210 million children have received a shoebox. This picture shows boxes delivered this year to a Muslim minority community in Mongolia.

To help the Faith Quest kids in their efforts to be a blessing to children elsewhere, please bring items you would like to donate. You can pick up a list of potential items from the display table, or if you want, you can pack a box yourself. New items only, please, and no liquids. Bring the boxes or donations to the church by October 29 at the latest.
