GETTING READY FOR SUNDAY: PREVIEW OF THE READINGS

“What God has done for us in Christ, He intends to do in us and through us.” This pretty much sums up the theme of Trinity season. In the Incarnation, the Eternal Son and Word of God, who is Jesus Christ, united Himself to our lowly human nature, thereby exalting or “lifting” us up to Himself, in a communion of love. In our Epistle lesson St Paul sets out the implications of this “lifting up ” for the character of our relationships with each other.  And in our Gospel lesson St. Luke gives us a picture of how it is that through the Incarnation Christ has healed our human nature, in which we take on the character of Christ which is humility.

THE LESSON : Ephesians 4:1-6

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call,  one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all.

THE GOSPEL : Luke 14. 1-11

On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely. Just then, in front of him, there was a man who had dropsy. And Jesus asked the lawyers and Pharisees, ‘Is it lawful to cure people on the sabbath, or not?’ But they were silent. So Jesus took him and healed him, and sent him away. Then he said to them, ‘If one of you has a child or an ox that has fallen into a well, will you not immediately pull it out on a sabbath day?’ And they could not reply to this. When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honour, he told them a parable. ‘When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honour, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, “Give this person your place”, and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, “Friend, move up higher”; then you will be honoured in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.’

PHOTO BOOK AND WAIVER UPDATE

On August 4, 2024, St. Mary’s Church introduced a new photo release form. This form allows us to capture and use photos and videos from various church events for newsletters, social media, and other church-related materials, much like what you might see in our school system.

If you haven’t completed this form yet, please do so and submit it to Yvonne as soon as possible at stmarysanglican@sasktel.net

You have two options for submission:

  • • Sign electronically, or
  • • Fill out a printed form and drop it in the return box located on the table outside the office at St. Mary’s. Extra forms are available there.

You can include all your family members on a single form. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mike H.

If you’d like to have your photo taken, please find Mike H or Lyndon L during coffee time after the service, otherwise you can send your own family pictures in to Yvonne.

Don’t forget to sign the waiver so we can include your photo in our congregational photo book!

Around Sunday October 6th, Yvonne will be sending out to our Parish members an electronic copy of our “Parish List Photos.” These photos can be saved on your phone or on your computer or you can print them at home. If you don’t have access to either save or print the photo list, please contact Yvonne and for a small fee of $3.00 (to cover ink and paper) she will arrange to print you a copy.Thank you for your cooperation!

THE RECTOR’S BOOK STUDY

Have you ever referred to God as “the Man upstairs”? Most Western Christians living in a secular society have unwittingly relegated God and all things spiritual to the “second story” of the universe: a realm we cannot reach except through death. The effect of this is to banish God, along with the saints and angels, from our everyday lives.

In Everywhere Present, popular blogger and podcaster Fr. Stephen Freeman makes a compelling case for bringing God down from this imaginary second storey and becoming aware of His living and active presence in our lives here and now. Learning to practice your Christian faith in a one-storey universe will change your life-and make possible the living, intimate relationship with God you’ve always dreamed of.

This short 100 page book is divided into the following chapters:

  • Chapter 1: The Shape of the Universe.
  • Chapter 2: Sitting in a Cave art Mar Saba
  • Chapter 3: We Live in an Altar.
  • Chapter 4: The God Who Is Not There.
  • Chapter 5: Christian Atheism
  • Chapter 6: The Shape of the One Story Universe
  • Chapter 7: The Hallway at the End of the World
  • Chapter 8: A Room with a View
  • Chapter 9: The Literal Truth
  • Chapter 10: The Mystery of Persons
  • Chapter 11: A Life of Careful Devotion.
