At the end of the service today we will be calling to mind and grieving the loss of the millions of war dead in conflicts past and present, and offering prayers for them and for the world. You know the older you get, the more funerals you end up going to, and after a while you have more friends and family who are dead than alive. You are reminded of the prospect of your own death, and the need to prepare.

Aren’t you glad that we have the Nicene Creed as part of our worship every Sunday? I mean if you are not going to believe this, then what are you going to believe? What alternatives are there?
The American writer and cultural commentator, David Zahl, in a spirit of play and confession, wrote “The Seculosity Creed ” a piece of “sub-Nicene ridiculousness” in which he presents what our modern secular age offers us by way of faith and hope commitments to live by, which may obtain even here north of the border, and in moments of weakness, draw us in. Hope you enjoy it, as much as I did.

St. Mary the Virgin Anglican Church plans to sponsor a South Sudanese refugee family of six, currently living in a Ugandan refugee camp. We have raised about $17,000, and we will continue to raise the remaining $18,000 to achieve the goal of raising $35,500 to support the refugee family once they arrive in Regina. You can support St. Mary’s Refugee Sponsorship Program by:
1. Sending your support through email transfer to (stmaryregina (at) gmail.com). Please include ‘South Sudanese Refugee Family Sponsorship” in the message. St. Mary already has automatic deposit set up for Interac electronic transfers. No password is required.

3. Attending South Sudanese Fall Super (South Sudanese Food Fair) – a fundraiser to be held October 26 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in St. Mary’s upper hall. Meals will be prepared by South Sudanese people in Regina, in support of the family in the refugee camp. You can also place your order at the church office for pick on October 26, 2019.

So, tomorrow is the BIG DAY, when Canadians go to the polls. I have been mulling over the Collect in The Book of Common Prayer for an election, where we ask that God to “which guide and direct the minds of those who are called at this time to elect fit persons to serve in the Parliament… that in the exercise of their choice they may promote God’s glory and the welfare of this Dominion.” (BCP p. 50).

So today is Harvest Thanksgiving, and it’s a signal to us of the importance the Church attaches to this celebration that the furnishings in the church and the clergy are vested in white, which of course is the color for Christmas and Easter. So what’s the connection between the coming in the flesh of the God/ Man Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection, and Harvest Thanksgiving? I’ll come back to this a little later in the sermon.
